Principal's Message 2018-2019

Dear Jefferson Community

Welcome back to the 2018-2019 school year! Here us ROAR! I hope everyone has had a restful summer and is looking forward to a great school year! It is a tremendous honor to be the Principal of Jefferson Elementary School. The staff and community of Jefferson Elementary are dedicated to the success of all students and their future. Our learning environment is centered around students, guided by teachers, and supported by home and community. Through our shared effort, we were able to increase Jefferson Elementary School’s attendance rate, promote a safe and effective community, build innovative programs, and earned first in the CUSD in the overall 2017-2018 achievement rate in the state performance known as the CAASPP.

Jefferson continues to shine as a school of excellence. We are proud to have earned a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award, Blue Ribbon, and National Distinguished School in 2014. We recently received the Civic Learning Award of Merit and National Beacon Award from Imagine Learning for increasing literacy rates at Jefferson Elementary School. We continue to build innovative programs that will support your child in his or her college journey such as Project Lead the Way/Launch and AVID (5th-8th). All students at Jefferson Elementary School will receive an iPad for classroom usage.  We will have many more programs that we will introduce as we continue down the school year.

As we move into the 2018-2019 school year, we will continue to focus on improving student outcomes. In order to help us best meet your children’s needs, your partnership and support are extremely important in the following areas.

1) Attendance Goal of 98% or more. Kindergarten is dismissed at 2:15 p.m. in designated areas (please see district calendar).  School gates are open at 7:30 a.m. with supervision. Students are to be in lined up by 7:50 a.m. Our instructional time is from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on regular school days. Please be mindful of schedule changes and arrange proper pick up with your child.
2) Safe and Effective Environment. Please adhere to entrance and exit gates. All visitors are to utilize the front gates and check in the front office. Loitering is strictly prohibited. We are a closed and safe campus and all gates will be locked by 8:10 a.m. Visitors are not allowed to go directly to the classrooms without approvals.

3) Cell phones are to be in the students’ backpack all times and are turned off. Your child may use the cell phones once they leave campus if necessary. For any emergencies, we do have our classroom and office phones available.
4) If your child is bring their own lunch, we highly encourage healthy lunches and prohibit items identified as unhealthy food/snacks such as hot chips, Cheetos, energy drinks, Takis, candy). Water is the only drink we allow in the classroom.
5) Uniforms are to be worn daily unless when we have special events or celebration.

6) To protect our instructional time and safety of students, we prohibit celebrating birthday parties. Please ensure to report any allergies to your child’s teacher or school nurse.
7) Avoid early pickups and schedule doctor/dentist appointments after school on weekends.
8) Complete school forms and submit them in a timely manner.
9) There are no toys, balls, or any items that can distract student learning allowed at school.
10) Follow the district and school policies

11)  Check your child’s work daily and ensure to communicate with your child’s teacher or staff for any needs.

Traffic can be very congested before the start of school and immediately before and during dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation in being patient, driving slowly and carefully through the parking lot and streets. We have aligned our preschool and kindergarten schedule to our daily schedule. We will be announcing our closed campus expectations this week.

A big thank you to all our parents especially our Jefferson volunteers. With their continued support, the Jefferson staff is committed to providing educational and entertaining activities throughout the school year. We are always interested in additional parent volunteers.

As Jefferson’s principal, I look forward to working with Jefferson families to write the next chapter of Jefferson’s journey. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via phone at 310-898-6190 or email at saquino@compton.k12.ca.us.

Sincerely,
